In Destiny 2, there’s a new season called “Season of the Deep” that has a water theme. One surprising addition to the game is a fishing mini-game. It’s not as detailed as a dedicated fishing game, but it’s a fun little distraction.
There are some things to consider, like using bait, a Focused Fishing meter, and the fact that the fishing spots change. Fishing is also important for a special hidden quest to get a powerful item.
In this guide, we’ll explain where to find fishing spots, how to use the Focused Fishing meter, and the rewards you can get from fishing in Destiny 2.
How to Unlock Fishing
Before you can begin fishing in the game, you need to unlock it. To start fishing in the game, you need to follow some steps.
First, you can’t fish right away. You have to finish the first week of the “Into the Depths” quest and the intro mission. After that, a new quest called “Gone Fishin'” will pop up, and you should talk to Hawthorne in the Tower.
Next, you need to collect 20 Bait. You can get Bait by doing various activities like playlist missions, the new Season of the Deep missions, patrol missions, public events, or by finding special materials in different locations.
Patrol missions give you 2 Bait, while Heroic public events give you the most, around 7 to 8 Bait. Once you have the Bait, the quest will update, and you’ll need to go to the Outskirts to start fishing.
How to Do Fishing in Destiny 2?
Fishing in Destiny 2 is pretty simple if you know where to go. First, you need to progress through the early part of the Season of the Deep questline.
Once you do that, you’ll get a quest from Hawthorne to go fishing. You can fish at specific locations on three different planets: Nessus, the EDZ, and the Throne World.
These fishing spots are kind of like public events, and you’ll often see other players hanging around the docks when the fishing spots are active.
In the Outskirts area of the game, you’ll come across a Fishing Pond. Look for a shining beam of light if you’re far away, as it will guide you to the fishing spot. There are three places where you can fish: the EDZ, Nessus, and Savathun’s Throne World.
To start fishing, go near the water and press the button. Keep a close eye on the bobber in the water, and press the same button again when it disappears under the water.
If you catch the fish just as the bobber goes down, it’s called a Perfect Catch. Getting a Perfect Catch increases the chance of catching a high-quality fish.
When you go fishing in a game, you need bait from your inventory to catch fish. If you don’t have bait, you can still catch fish, but they might not be as good. There are 28 different types of fish you can catch.
Some are really special (Legendary), some are not as special (Rare), and some are quite common (Uncommon). There’s also one super rare fish called Exotic, but it doesn’t count in the 28 types.
The fishing area in the game doesn’t stay forever. It goes away if there’s a big event happening in the same place. But don’t worry, it will come back a little while after the event is over.
Destiny 2 Fishing Locations: Where to Fish
Finding all the fishing spots in Destiny 2 is quick because there are just three places:
- The European Dead Zone (EDZ)
- Nessus
- Savathun’s Throne World.
You can identify fishing spots easily by looking for Koi fish banners, which show you’re near a fishing area. Additionally, you’ll usually find a circular dock nearby.
The European Dead Zone (EDZ)
To find the fishing spot in Destiny 2 at EDZ, start by going to the southern part of The Outskirts. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you see a big lake or river nearby.
Nessus
If you want to go fishing in the Cistern region on Nessus, head to the eastern side near the Well of Flame. Look for a fishing spot that has koi fish banners and a circular dock like the one in the EDZ (European Dead Zone).
However, there’s a key difference in Nessus – the fishing spot is located in a Vex lake, which can be dangerous. So, be cautious and ready for a challenge when you go fishing there.
Savathun’s Throne World
In the Throne World, the fishing spot is different from the other two because it can change its location a bit. It’s usually near the Miasma area, especially in the northwest part. Look for koi fish banners to help you find it.
How Does Bait Work?
When you go fishing, you need bait to catch special fish. Bait is like a tool that helps you catch better fish. You don’t have to worry about using it; the game will use it automatically if you have some. You can see how much bait you have before you start fishing. You can collect up to 500 pieces of bait.
You can get bait by doing different things in the game, like Salvage and Deep Dive modes, patrols, public events, or playing activities like Crucible and Gambit. You can also get bait by collecting materials in the game world.
How does Focused Fishing work?
When you’re fishing in a game and want to catch special fish, you should use a special fishing buff called “Focused Fishing.” This buff makes it more likely for you to catch rare fish, including the ones you need for special items.
There’s a meter on your screen that shows your progress with Focused Fishing. You can see it on the left side of the screen when you’re near a pond in the game. To fill up this meter, you need to catch legendary or exotic fish.
The cool thing is that it’s not just your catches that fill the meter; it also goes up when other players near you catch fish, even if they’re not in your group. So, it’s best to fish at a pond with lots of other players.
When your meter reaches certain levels, your chances of catching rare fish get better. You’ll get messages in the game that tell you when your progress is improving, like “Nearby fish have begun to take notice.” Just remember, the meter resets when the pond disappears, so stay at the same fishing spot to benefit from Focused Fishing.
Rewards For Fishing
You can earn rewards by fishing, but they’re not super exciting. In a place called the H.E.L.M, there’s a fish tank where you can keep the fish you catch.
When you put a new type of fish in the tank, you’ll get rewards, like special weapons for the season. It’s also a good way to get Glimmer and boost your reputation.
When you catch a fish for the first time, you’ll see it swimming in the fish tank at the H.E.L.M. As you catch more fish, you can unlock cool things to decorate the fish tank. Plus, catching fish is needed to earn the new seasonal title.
Summary
In Destiny 2’s “Season of the Deep,” a fun fishing mini-game has been added. To unlock fishing, complete the “Into the Depths” quest and talk to Hawthorne. Collect bait by doing various activities, then head to the fishing spots in EDZ, Nessus, or Savathun’s Throne World. Use bait, focus on Perfect Catches, and be aware of changing fishing areas. Rewards include special weapons, Glimmer, and reputation boosts. Decorate a fish tank in the H.E.L.M. with caught fish for additional rewards and work towards earning the seasonal title.
